The Yamaha NS-1000M is one of the most famous loudspeakers ever made. Launched in 1974, it was the world's first speaker system to use pure beryllium diaphragms for its midrange and tweeter, a material prized for being extremely light and incredibly rigid. Originally designed for home and studio use, the NS-1000M was adopted by broadcasters such as Sweden's national broadcaster and Finland's YLE, which ordered 200 units. It stayed in production for 23 years and sold over 200,000 units. Today it's a true icon of Japanese hi-fi and one of the most sought-after vintage monitors in the world.
Design & Engineering
The NS-1000M is a three-way, sealed-box design. A 30cm woofer handles the bass, while an 8.8cm beryllium dome midrange and a 3cm beryllium dome tweeter cover the frequencies above it. Yamaha made the beryllium domes using an electron-beam vacuum vapour deposition process. They are lighter and stiffer than conventional domes, so they react almost instantly to the signal, giving the NS-1000M its famous speed, clarity and detail, with exceptionally low colouration through the critical midrange. The crossover splits the signal at 500Hz and 6kHz with 12dB/octave slopes. Front-panel level controls let you fine-tune the midrange and treble to suit your room. The "M" (Monitor) version has a black semi-gloss cabinet and protective metal grilles over the woofers. This pair comes with stands, which lift the speakers to the right listening height for the best imaging.
