Introduced in 1987 and produced in successive revisions until the late 1990s, it earned a reputation that has outlived its own production run entirely, making it a consistently sought-after option for anyone searching for a classic hi-fi integrated amplifier or a capable vintage amplifier with a built-in phono stage.

Its appeal comes down to a design philosophy that prioritised transparency and reliability over specification-sheet flash.

Design & Engineering

The 8000A follows an orthodox, straight-line signal path, with Class A line amplification and separate power supply sections for each channel. Its dual phono inputs, one MM and one MC, were a considerable rarity at this price point and remain one of the amp's most-praised features, allowing owners to run virtually any cartridge without needing an outboard phono stage, an obvious advantage for anyone building a vinyl-focused hi-fi system.

The amplifier is also notably tolerant of difficult loudspeaker loads, driving anything from vintage Wharfedales and Missions to modern KEF and Q Acoustics monitors without complaint. It can be split into separate pre and power sections via a modification detailed in the service manual, giving the unit a second life as either a standalone power amp or the front end of a more ambitious system.

Technical Specifications

Rated at 60 watts RMS per channel into 8 ohms (earlier revisions were specified at 75 watts), with total harmonic distortion below 0.05% and frequency response of 20Hz–20kHz. Signal-to-noise ratio measures 75dB (MC), 78dB (MM), and 80dB (line). Speaker load impedance of 4 to 16 ohms. Measures 445 x 74 x 335mm and weighs approximately 7.6kg.
