Direct-Drive Quartz-Controlled Turntable
The SL-1200LTD is a special-edition version of the legendary SL-1200 series, introduced in 1995 to commemorate two million units sold worldwide. Based on the SL-1200MK3 platform, it combines Technics' proven direct-drive engineering with a piano-black finish and extensive 24K gold-plated detailing. With only 5,000 units produced and each unit individually numbered, the SL-1200LTD has become one of the more distinctive and collectible versions of the iconic SL-1200.
Design & Engineering
The SL-1200LTD retains the core engineering that made the SL-1200 a benchmark for direct-drive turntables: a quartz-controlled, brushless direct-drive motor provides precise rotational speed and high starting torque, while the high-rigidity chassis and S-shaped tonearm are designed to provide stable groove tracking. The LTD edition distinguishes itself with a glossy piano-black cabinet and 24K gold-plated components across the platter, tonearm assembly, tonearm base and other hardware. A dedicated pitch-reset button allows the pitch to instantly return to ±0%, regardless of the fader's position — a feature later carried over to the SL-1200MK3D.
Technical Specifications
The SL-1200LTD is a manual, quartz-controlled direct-drive turntable with 33⅓ and 45 rpm speeds, ±8% pitch adjustment, and electronic braking. It achieves a wow-and-flutter figure of 0.025% WRMS, with a startup time of approximately 0.7 seconds. The 332mm aluminium die-cast platter weighs approximately 1.7kg, while the 230mm S-shaped tonearm provides 6mm of height adjustment and 0–4g of tracking-force adjustment. The turntable measures approximately 453 × 172 × 355mm and weighs around 12kg.
