The Micromega Stage 3 is a vintage hi-fi CD player crafted in France by Micromega, a respected audio brand known for its focus on musical purity and solid engineering. Launched in 1994 as the flagship of Micromega's Concept Series, alongside the Stage 1 and Stage 2, it was designed to deliver clear, engaging CD playback without the artificial sheen of many digital players. Its emphasis on musicality and a natural, analogue-like presentation over clinical precision makes it a sought-after audiophile CD player for collectors and for listeners building a vintage hi-fi system on a sensible budget.
Design & Engineering
At its core is the Philips CDM12.4 transport, one of the most respected CD mechanisms of its era, with a linear sled design for stable, accurate disc reading. Digital-to-analogue conversion uses two Philips TDA1305 bitstream DAC chips running in differential mode, which cancels common-mode noise and lowers distortion compared with the single-chip Stage 1.
The Stage 3 goes a step further than the Stage 2 by giving each audio channel its own power supply, isolating the left and right signal paths for cleaner separation. The result is a smooth, fluid sound suited to vocals, acoustic instruments, and orchestral music.
A coaxial digital output lets the Stage 3 also serve as a dedicated CD transport for an external DAC or digital processor, so it can be integrated into a modern digital setup. Its minimalist chassis has a timeless aesthetic that blends retro charm with everyday practicality, and the front panel keeps a clean layout with an easy-to-read display.
Technical Specifications
The Stage 3 is a standalone CD player (CD only) with a Philips CDM12.4 transport, dual TDA1305 bitstream DACs in differential mode, and a frequency response of 20Hz–20kHz. Connections include a 2V RMS analogue line output via RCA and a coaxial S/PDIF digital output for external DACs. It measures approximately 43 x 8.8 x 28cm (17" x 3.5" x 11") and weighs approximately 4.8kg (10.6lb).
