How to Store Your Records
Serious about vinyl? Find out about some vinyl care 101
Vinyl records are built to last, with the right care, a well-maintained record can continue playing beautifully for decades, even a century. However, without proper storage and handling, they’re vulnerable to warping, surface noise, and wear that can permanently affect sound quality.
The good news? Preserving your records doesn’t require elaborate systems or expensive gear. Just a few smart habits and consistent care can go a long way in protecting your collection for the long haul.
Whether you're new to vinyl or building a serious archive, here are some tried-and-true tips to keep your records looking and sounding their best:
1. Keep It Cool and Dry
Vinyl is sensitive to heat and moisture. Aim to store your collection in a room with a stable temperature between 15°C and 24°C (60°F to 75°F), and humidity between 35% and 45%. Avoid placing records near radiators, windows, or areas with direct sunlight, as these can lead to warping and fading.
2. Store Records Vertically
Records should always be stored upright not stacked. Horizontal stacking may lead to warping or pressure damage over time. Use sturdy shelves or crates designed for vinyl, and avoid overcrowding.
3. Use Protective Sleeves
Each record should be stored in a clean inner sleeve, ideally anti-static and smooth. Outer sleeves add another layer of protection, shielding album artwork from dust, fingerprints, and UV light. Together, they help maintain both sound quality and visual appeal.
4. Minimise Light Exposure
Excessive exposure to bright light or sunlight can quickly fade album covers. Store your records away from direct light sources whenever possible to preserve their appearance.
5. Avoid Temperature Fluctuations
Sudden changes in temperature can damage vinyl. Choose a space where the environment remains stable year-round no attics, basements, or garages.
6. Use Strong, Level Shelving
Records are heavy, and not all shelving is up to the task. Ensure your storage system is level and strong enough to bear the weight of your collection without sagging or bowing.
7. Clean Before You Store
Dirt and dust trapped in the grooves contribute to surface noise like pops and crackles. Always clean your records even lightly before returning them to their sleeves.
8. Handle With Clean Hands
Your fingers carry oils and residue that can damage the surface over time. Always handle records by the edges and label.
9. Use Dividers for Larger Collections
Dividers help prevent records from leaning, which can lead to warping. They also make it easier to browse and organize larger collections efficiently.
