There are phono stages, and then there's the Zanden Model 1000 — a piece of equipment built entirely around a single conviction: that no single equalization curve was ever going to do justice to every record on your shelf. Most vinyl era labels didn't actually master to the same standard.

RCA, Decca, and Columbia all used different playback curves, and the Model 1000 is one of the only phono preamplifiers ever built that lets you correctly select between them — RIAA, Columbia, and Decca — via a dedicated mercury rotary switch on the front panel.

Instead of the CR-type or NF-type equalization circuits used in almost every other phono stage, Zanden built the Model 1000 around a fixed-impedance bridged-T circuit

A method borrowed from professional playback systems, using precision capacitors, resistors, and a hand-wound inductor rather than feedback-based EQ. The amplification stage runs on Zanden's own NO-NFB (no negative feedback) vacuum tube circuit, a patented design chosen specifically to preserve the natural harmonic structure of the signal rather than correcting it after the fact.

Every detail underneath the chassis was built for long-term stability over convenience: a tube rectifier and input choke power supply (avoiding the switching noise of a diode rectifier), current-regulated tube heater circuits, input and curve-selection handled by high-reliability miniature relays, and polypropylene film capacitors throughout the signal path.

The chassis itself is machined from 16mm aluminum with gold-color alumite and chrome plating, topped with a mirror-finished 1.2mm stainless-steel cover — as substantial to hold as it is to listen through.
